Just joined today and browsing I noticed a post from Keith in April last year asking for details of SS Snowden Smith. It may be of interest that this vessel was used to transport 16 LAA Regt from Malta to Cyprus to provide defence for Akrotiri airport during the Suez campaign. I remember vividly being told that the Med was always calm and having just come through a violent storm in the Bay of Biscay I was much relieved. Within twenty four hours most were playing Hughie over the side due to a truly violent storm!
Thanks for that carrots. I'll add a link to the photo. http://rfanostalgia.org/gallery3/index.php/RFA-AMPHIBIOUS/Army/Army-Landing-Ships/Snowden-Smith
Hi Keith, just joined after searching for images of the Snowden Smith. My father James Ronald Smith was a merchant officer and volunteered as a civilian to be the 3rd Engineer officer to take troops and tanks to the suez during the crisis. There had been a serious accident on the ship prior to his trip where the pressurised engine room had been compromised and the flame blowback fatally wounded one of the crew. Hence taking some experienced civilian crew. Too dumb to be scared he told me. I don't think so! Anyway I have some funny stories about Hua trip. Like sharing his cabin with and a tank commanding officer who brought his shotguns, tennis gear, golf gear etc. All of it crammed into a one person cabin. I too am looking for info and a good image.
