Jeff I assume no info because your other post did not get a reply Cpl Shannahan Royal Sigs.SAS regards Clive
Is one of the problems here that you are looking for details of someone from 1962ish. That could lead you to problems of disclosure or data protection - just thinking out loud TD
There was a Cpl Shanahan who was a member of 3rd Parachute Battalion and was captured at Arnhem. He later went on to serve with the SAS in Malaya and then in Korea and was at one stage part of the Royal Signals motorcycle display team. Going through the POW book I think his number was 14428146. Cheers Arnhem
UK, British Prisoners of War, 1939-1945 Name: V P Shanahan Rank: Private Army Number: 14428146 Regiment: Army Air Corps Camp Type: Stalag Camp Number: XII-A Camp Location: Limburg, Baden-Württemberg TD
If he served post 1948 he would be issued a different service number (when all 3 services started to use the same set of 8 digit numbers). Steve
I might be wrong but I thought that if you had unbroken service you did not receive a new number but carried your original one until you left. I'm pretty sure the Shanahan I'm talking about kept the same number until he finally left. Cheers Arnhem
Hi, Apologies. I think you are correct. I was basing my response on the handful of post 1945 service records posted on the forum for men who re enlisted post 1948. On reflection I can recall seeing mention of pre 1948 service numbers for then serving soldiers in Regimental Journals in the mid 1960’s. Steve
Thank You for your replies - Paddy was my boss in the Mt Bays 30 Signal Regiment, Blandford 1962. I was inspecting Vehicles REME. Perfect Gentleman.
I think I have a photo of him somewhere if it would help in confirming if he is the same Shanahan as you knew. If I can find it would you like me to post it ? Cheers Arnhem
Hi Sorry I haven't visited the site for a few weeks. I will dig the photo out and post it later this week. Cheers Arnhem
