"D-Day Normandy 1944" provides a 21st Century look at the Allied invasion of N.W. Europe. This is D-Day, 6 June 1944 as an eyewitness of the day's events may have seen it.

To begin with, unlike most of the surviving film footage of D-Day this dramatised documentary of some of the events that took place is in colour. There is a 2-dimensional version of the film for standard film screenings. With the aid of 3-D glasses and a 3-D screen there is also a 3-D version of the story available. The description is also available in English and French versions and lasts just under an hour.

It is the 3-D English language version of the film that is being shown on the big screen at the Rheged Discovery Centre near Penrith, Cumbria between 20 September 2014 and 31 January 2015. With this new approach to the D-Day story in my opinion "D-Day Normandy 1944" should appeal to all ages - from 8 to 88 and beyond. According to the film's narrator, Tom Brokaw:

"This is the clearest view yet of what happened. It gives a new generation a chance to understand one of the most important events in the history of mankind."

Following a recent visit to the Rheged Discovery Centre and looking at this film, I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in the Second World War and the events of D-Day, 6 June 1944 in particular. The film is being shown at Rheged as part of a season about remembrance of war, beginning with the First World War.

Sorry, I thought the trailer was so cheesy I wouldn't go on to watch the film if it's all like that....
