"My Dad says the 4 photos were all taken in Xylokastro, Greece between January and April 1945." My uncle never knew his father, but he does know that he served in Xylokastro, and was there until at least July 1945. His name was "Bill" Wright. he had a reputation for being a "ladies man". How many troops were there at that time, could "Bill" be in the photos?
I guess he could but family members are the only ones likely to know! If you are interested in finding out about your uncle's service then there is only one place to start - send off for his service records, you do not need to know any military details. Get a copy of military service records Do you know for certain that Bill was in 46 Recce? His records will tell, if you are sure he was there is some history here, but beware of jumping to conclusions, servicemen often transferred between units. 46th Recce
Thanks Tony. We only just found who he actually was and are about to apply for the service record now we have a death cert.
Looking at the cap badges in the last photo, perhaps there are marines there too looking at the general shapes? I'm reasonably sure he not in the 46th Recce, he was in the KRRC in 1942 and in Xylokastro in July 1945 and in Greece for sometime before that. His records will tell all in due course.
Andrew. Royal Marines being included in a 46 Inf Div photo is quite likely. For a short period in Feb 44 in the Cassino sector, 2 Special Service Brigade was under command 46 Inf Div in the hills around Monte Faito and Monte Ornito. Regards Frank
