I did my research this time ; 1- tag der arbeit badge - german 1935 labour day may holiday badge .tinnie i believe it is called . 2-ne nemo arbeit lacessit -who dares attack me with impunity or in scottish - no one meddles with me .this is the motto of three different scottish regiments i think including scots guards . 3-uhr@lange eisenach - turns out this is a watchmaker who comes from eisenach town . But where would a royal artillery man find these .Any thoughts . I also recall my dad telling me at some point he was assigned to working with the gurkas -how would this happen .they called him johnie but i think they called everbody that
I also recall my dad telling me at some point he was assigned to working with the gurkas -how would this happen . Artillery officers were attached to infantry and tank units to find targets and direct the guns behind them - Forward Observation Officers or FOOs as they were known. If your dad wasn't an officer, he may have been a Gunner or an NCO in the FOO party, e.g. a driver, wireless operator. D'oh! Just seen the other post. He would have been laying telephone lines for the FOO to use. Line was a more secure and reliable means of communication than radio - as long as the lines didn't get cut by fire.
I would think SNCO's would direct Arty too? I believe Gunners can call it in today if they've done the course....Although a Arty type member should be able to confirm this for sure. Cheers Andy
