Hello folks My father Sgt Frederick Robert Welsh of the Sherwood Forresters was a POW at Stalag 8b Lambowice from 1942 until the wars end. I would like to find out if he was involved in the dreadful death march towards the end of the war. Is there any way of finding this out? There is nothing from him at Kew
David, In the book The last Escape by John Nichol, he mentions the march from Stalag 8b to Stalag X111b near Nuremberg on pages 168 to 171 which I have reproduced for you below. It appears they had a bad time but not half as bad as the columns of Russians and Jews they ran into being moved by the SS. The best I can do I am afraid. I know what you mean about Kew, I read the many, many packs about the Long March from Stalag XXA and only struck lucky as the man I was looking for was listed as one of the dead. Will get back to you about the Sherwood Foresters when I have time. Steve
Hi have you tried the following. Sherwood Foresters Regimental head Quarters (Now The Mercians) A H L McDOUGALL Admin Officer RHQ MERCIAN (Nottingham) Foresters House Chetwynd Barracks Chilwell Nottingham NG9 5HA Tel: 0115 9465415 Mil: 94451 5215 Fax: 0115 9469853 Mil: 94451 5223 They were very helpful to me in respect to my own researches on my father. What battalion was your father in as the 1st Bn were in 1942 Egypt and Libya with the majority being captured at Tobruk so I presume it was another. I have quite a lot of information on the 1st battalion
Hello Trevor Sorry for the delayed response. My father was in the 1st batallion c company and as you correctly pointed out, was one of the many men captured in Tobruk. Any info you have on his batallion gratefully accepted
