i have just received some army records and wonder if someone can help decipher the following please.

    What does Embodied actually mean?

21 Army Group BLA - what is BLA

Posted 30 RHU - meaning please

    2 Ech - meaning please

I know CB means confined to barracks and FP means forfeits pay but what does forfeits 5 days pay by RW mean.

    Many thanks.

    Hi,

    1. Embodied is usually a Territorial Army phrase meaning called out for full time service.

    2. BLA is British Liberation Army.

    3. 30 RHU is 30 Reinforcement Holding Unit.

    4. 2 Ech will likely mean 2nd Echelon - an administrative unit.

    5. RW means Royal Warrant in service record context it is the legal authority by which a Commanding Officer imposes a disciplinary award/sentence.

Many thanks Steve, that is really helpful. As an aside would you know what A.M.M.U.A. camp is?

    You're welcome Barb.

Sorry I can't help re that one. Context is everything when it comes to interpreting acronyms on service records. If you can attach a copy of the original document - or even just the part of it/line of text with that abbreviation on - it may be that someone on the forum can assist.

Sorry I'm not sure why I hit the quote button!
Thanks. I'm not sure I know how to attach a copy but I will quote the text at a later stage.

I have no idea of that one either, A.M. could be Army Medical. But until we have the context of the entry and what area/corps the soldier was serving in, its just guess work
    For example
Cpl Jones was posted to A.M.C. Which means Cpl Jones was posted to the Army Medical Corps.
However if Cpl Jones was in the RE it might mean he was posted to Airfield Maintenance Company.

When you write a reply then there is an option on the bottom right to :

    'Upload a file'

select this option and it will provide a screen that then asks which file (from your computer) you wish to upload

This is what Statement of Service Form says:
    11.5.39
TA 4 years. the Royal Fusiliers Army Catering Corps
    Unit 2/8 Posted
Attended AMMUA Camp for 15 days in 1939
    Embodied 2/9/39
Transferred to ACC 4.4.42 and permanently attached to 11th Ben Royal Fusiliers.
Then in 3.9.1943 2 Ech 2 Para Bn
    To X11 15.9.43.
    To 5 Bn GRTD 18.10.43

    Does any of this help?
    What does GRTD mean?

    Many thanks.

I guess it's an acronym for annual camp that TA soldiers went on to remain current in weapons training etc etc

GRTD is probably General Reinforcemant Training Depot e.g. WO 169/13713

    Barb,

Are you sure you are not simply misreading ANNUAL as "AMMUA"?

It makes more sense in the context of what you have posted.

However as previously mentioned it helps members interpreting entries on documents if they have sight of the original documents.

    Hello everyone
Thank you for your input. I am sure I am not misreading. I did at first think it might be Annual but I got other opinions and agreed it says AMMUA. I use an iPad so difficult to post documents but should there be other queries I will see if one of the family can post for me.

'Annual' seems so obvious, especially given the context, that I now feel a bit stupid...

Have you only got a statement of service, rather than a full copy of his records which might offer a different interpretation ?

    Agree with Charley.

TA 4 years. the Royal Fusiliers Army Catering Corps
Transferred to ACC 4.4.42 and permanently attached to 11th Ben Royal Fusiliers.

The second line might seem strange as your man was already in the RFACC.
So this would be just a paper transfer rather than transfer of men.
The ACC was only active from 1941 to 1993.

    What's an E501?
