Looks like a Panther turret to me, especially the gun mantle.
and escape hatch on the back. I think the escape hatch on the King Tiger was square.

Destroyed western hardware in service in the "Ostfront":

M3 Grants during the Kursk maƫlstrom, and
a Churchill near Prokhorovka, in '43.

Is that a post-war "range queen"??? Look at the VERY close clustering of hits on the side of the turret - and no MG. Looks like wherever it is, it's been there for some time with people fiddling with it...

What do you suppose the photographer was trying to show with this photo of the knocked out Mk IV? How was the tank knocked out perhaps. If I were to guess I'd suggest that it was perhaps hit by a HE round just around the idler wheel at the bottom right of the photo, notice the wheel is missing from the axle.

Seen this pic before. Its heavily trimmed, the orignal shows two heavily gutted pzIV's on the russian planes. Blurb says Aircraft and kursk and may even be true.

Definitely a panther. Possibly the hit penetrated and caused the shells to go off blowing the turret from its mount.

I'd buy the HE theory, and 790 is a funny number.

I don't want to play photo interpretation games, but is that snow in the background and in the paint work? The contrast seems too high to be other than white. Kursk used to be celebrated in July...

Kevin, can you scan the original photo?

I wonder...looks like something has scoured the paint off that whole side of the tank, and if THAT bared the original balkenkreuz...could this be one of the 1967 Syrian Pz.IVs??? Hence the strange background contrast may actually be SAND and scrub...

Is it just me or does that tactical number look a bit Cyrillic?

    It sure does.

Were King Tigers employed in the West?
