In the 1901 census, there is a family (Stacey) living in Stanley, Durham. Daughter is Ann Fryer and S-in-L is Thomas. Looks like they emigrated.

    Red (cheap) headstones.

Many different stones were used experimentally. This is Locharbriggs sandstone from Scotland, used in many buildings since 1700. No idea why it was chosen, different stones are often local types. Don't think this one weathers too well and this particular one is probably a replacement.

This is a strange one I found in Malta and took a bit of research to uncover and contains two burials. One commemorated by the CWGC, the other is not.

The first burial was that of Raymond Banner from Methil. He was onboard the famous tanker Ohio during the battle for Malta during "Operation Pedestal" After surviving countless attacks on the convoy he was to die from "peritonitis" on the 26th September 1942 while at Malta and was buried in "Plot 8, Vault No.6" at the Ta' Braxia Cemetery and is not recorded with the CWGC and had no grave marker.

According to records of Merchant Navy burials I have, this grave belongs to the following seaman who died in 1945 and was officially granted war grave status.

WILLIAMS, Able Seaman, CLARENCE RICHARD, S.S. Don. Merchant Navy. 17th May 1945. Age 51. Son of Richard and Selina Williams, of Goole, Yorkshire. Div. 6. Grave 8.

Further research and information found recorded in the Deaths at Sea Register for June 1945 shows his cause of death was from "heart failure" and is not actually war related for him to be officially commemorated.

Some years later Raymond Banner's twin brother visited his grave and mounted his own headstone, which is attached to the official commission headstone of Clarence Williams.

Just another case of inconsistency when it comes to the commemoration of Merchant Seamen.

Not so much an unusual headstone, as a great name inscribed upon it. Made me chuckle. One of the gardeners at Brookwood pointed it out as one of his favourites.

    T. Manywounds, a native North American Indian.

    Name: MANYWOUNDS, TEDDY
    Nationality: Canadian
    Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Royal Canadian Army Service Corps
    Date of Death: 19/02/1942
    Service No: M/21082
Additional information: Son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Manywounds.
    Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
    Grave/Memorial Reference: 36. F. 6.
    Cemetery: BROOKWOOD MILITARY CEMETERY

    Can anyone help?
Back in the late 70's I visited Dinant on the borders of Belgium and France. On a bluff ovelooking the town is a Napoleonic Fort and in the grounds I came across a memorial to a downed RAF bomber (a Halifax - I think). The memorial listed the names of the aircrew.
Can anyone confirm the details or tell me where I could go to research this?
    Pete
