Can anyone tell me if discharge papers where issued to service personel after they where killed?
A member of a friends family, A George Craigie who served as a fitter the RAF was killed in an "accident" at an RAF training base in Montrose on the 24th of June 1937. He was buried in an unmarked grave in his hometown of Glasgow and as far as they know was not given a military funeral
where would we find details of this accident or can anyone shed any light on it ?
Also on the discharge papers there is a section which has for unknown reasons been blacked out !! any info or help would be greatly receved
    many thanks

    Hi,

I have a note that George Todd CRAIGIE is commemorated on the St Clement Dane RAF Roll of Honour under death occuring in June 1937.

There is no rank or service number quoted - do you know thses, or can you find them.

At this time it was usual for the RAF Squadron or Unit to be responsible for the burial and maintenance of the grave, if he died 'on air force service'

It is odd that the is in an unmarked grave - could it be that this accident was not one whilst on duty ..
perhaps 'local' newspapers of the period could answer this.

Which section has been blacked out ? Would need to see copy of papers - Could ir be the section relating to good conduct ?

    Cheers

    Hello David
As yet Im waiting for the discharge papers to be scanned and sent to me along with some other details of his service.
where can I see this Roll of Honor? is it online?
I have been to the Mitchell library in Glasgow and searched through the papers at the time but can find no mention of his death. will send you the details as soon as I recieve them.
    Thanks for the help

    Hello John,

The Interwar RAF Roll of Honour I am compiling is still 'work in progress', but I will happily check details.

George Todd CRAIGIE is commemorated on the St Clement Dane RAF Roll of Honour under death occuring in June 1937.
This Roll of Honour is in book form and is on open display at St Clement Danes Chuch in London (the RAF Church) though there is no more information recorded than
    June 1937
    George Todd CRAIGIE

I am trying to expand all the basic entries and I have found a good number of RAF Deaths in the interwar period not commemorated on the St Clement Danes Roll.
RAF Officers deaths were announced in the monthly issues of the Air Force Lists - information on other ranks deaths is often difficult to obtain.

I suspect that you may have to look at Montrose paper - or contact the Montrose Coroners office as an inquest would probably be held.

I have a suspicion that this may have been a suicide - there are several cases I have come across there servicemen took their own lives, whilst serving on RAF Stations

I will certainly be interested in seeing copies of the surviving papers

    Best Wishes

    David
