Hi everybody I'm a newbie here, brought here trying to get information about DLI. My grandfather served with them he was a Edinburgh man who I'm very proud of. I have posted a photo of my grandfather in his DLI uniform, well I hope I have lol new to this. X
Hi there Owen, can you tell me about this this please? I'm just starting out and know nothing other than he served with DLI. I have no family to help me so every bit of information will be very greatly received thank you x
Best thing to do is send off for his Service REcords from the MoD. https://www.gov.uk/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records The medal means he served in North Africa. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Africa_Star
Hi, Do you have a name or perhaps an Army number it may be he served with more than one regiment Kyle
Hi there, yes I have his full name and army number. I do know that after being with the DLI he went to Highland light infantry x
Hi Wenz I think Mr Jinks was hoping that you post the information about your grandfather, ie his name and service number, it will perhaps help members to sort out some information whilst you are filling in forms ans waiting for his service records. TD
Hi sorry about that, my grandfathers name is Elmer L Calder and number is 1474410. Thank you again for all the help. I lost my dear grandfather when I was a child, I would have loved to be sat talking to him getting all his stories now xx
That's a General Service Corps number. He would have been called up put in the GSC for basic training & then the army would have worked out where to send him.
Aww thanks Owen. Your help is great! My son is in the British Army and it's nice to tell him all the bits n pieces I know about his great grandfather. I was reading about the camp at Morton hall Edinburgh, I never knew there was a camp there at all! Great site, really enjoying all the reading. I have another photo of my grandfather but nobody could tell where he was at the time of the picture taken, he has a hat on which I can only describe as like tommy coopers hat? Lol. Thanks again x
Wenz As already mentioned by Owen the number quoted is most certainly a General Serrvice Corps number probably November/December 1942. My own was 14300260 and was given to me on call-up on 1/10/1942. Basic training at that time was 6 weeks then it was off to a training unit. Ron
Wow big change in basic training times nowadays! Thanks Ron. Loving all the info I'm getting on this site x
Hi, I`m going to disagree the number is a Royal Artillery number there`s not enough digits for it to be a General Service Corps number? Kyle
Hi, It just mean he originally enlisted into the Royal Artillery his time with the DLI came after this Kyle
Hi Wenz This should all become clearer once you have sent off the forms and received his service records back from the MOD, via the link Owen gave in post #4 above. It should explain which units he was in and where he went from signing on to signing off. TD
