I hear that this huge can of worms is about ready to be opened with Jentz & Doyle's book imminent and a few collectors persuaded to paint their vehicles with respect to the new research... the results are apparently 'surprising'...

    The Fearsome Tiger II

Its production name was Panzerkampfwagon VI Sd.Kfz 182 (Tank Battle Vehicle) by the Germans. This tank has been given many nicknames by the Allies. One that we are most familiar with is the King Tiger. The British use Royal Tiger and the Germans use KonigsTiger. No matter what language it is, it is the tank from hell. It was feared to the last day of its existence. <O:p
The earliest recorded time of that the heavy panzer was conceived was in 1937 when the first contract was awarded to Henschel. Two Years later Porsche initiated their own project which was very high-tech and advanced compared to Henschel’s designs. Both of the designs featured sloped armor but the idea didn’t come from encounters with the Russians but the Americans and the British. The British tanks had superior armor at the time.<O:p
On <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comhttp://www.ww2talk.com/forum/ /><st1:date Month=May 26, 1941</st1:date>, Hitler had a meeting with the top tank manufacturers at the time which started the development of the Heavy Tank. Hitler wonted a Heavy Panzer tank which had an increased effectiveness to penetrate enemy tank armor; poses heavier armor than previously conceived; and attain a maximum speed of 40km/h. These key features lead to the creation of the Tiger 1 and ultimately the King Tiger. It wasn’t until early 1943 that a new design for the King Tiger was sent in. <O:p
Even though the Tiger II is designated as the second design of the Tiger series, it is in almost every way an entirely different tank. The new main gun for the Tiger II was the famous 8.8cm anti-aircraft gun was modified into an ant-tank gun when it was realized that it was more effective as an anti-tank gun. The development of the chassis and the automotive system was awarded to Henschel and Porsche. The turret design was awarded to Krupp and <st1:City><ST1:pEssen</ST1:place</st1:City>. Much of the chassis design was based off of the sloped armor idea in which the armor is at an angle so that less armor can survive as long as armor that is thicker. The theory also states that if the armor is angled the anti-armor shells will simply bounce off of the hull unlike regular armor. As with the Panther the Tiger II’s armor was interlocked. The secondary weapon on of the tank was the standard anti-infantry M.G., the Maschinengewher model 1934. Its tracks are approximately 2 feet 8 ½ inches wide and weighed 2.5 tons each. Henschel’s design was accepted and later destined for mass production.<O:p
The tanks armor consisted of 180mm in the turret, 150mm in the superstructure, and 100mm in the hull. The tank had something called Zimmerit coating applied to the hull like most all German tanks. This coating was a type of anti-mine armor. The coating worked as a non-conductive irregular surface that reduced contact between the mine and the hull. This caused a mine to fall off from its own weight and the vibration of the vehicle. Note that Zimmerit coating possessed no anti-magnetic properties what so ever. <O:p
The tanks mobility is thanks to the V12 Maybach HL 230 P30 (700hp) along with a Maybach OLVAR EG 40 12 16 B (8forward and 4 reverse). The tiger could obtain a top speed of 35-38 Kph on road and 17 Kph off road. It had a range of 110 kilometers on the road and 80 off road. This was about average for a tank of that size but considering it was the heaviest tank of that time it would be hard to compare to other tanks. The radio was a decent model and was of a high quality. The Germans ore the ones that revolutionized the tank radio system with the headset that had the microphone at the throat along the voice box of the individual using it. This gave the user on the other end of the radio will get a clear signal without the deafening roar of the tank engine. <O:p
It had a large ammunition capacity for a tank of its size. The tiger carried 80 rounds of 88mm shells for the Porsche turret and 86 rounds for the Henschel turret along with 5850 round of ammunition for the 7.92mm, MG 34. It also had a large crew of 5 operators; three are in the turret and two in the hull as drivers.<O:p
The tanks combat history is very large and I do not have room to tell you all of it. No matter where the King Tiger fought it was feared allover the battlefield. The tank was feared to the very end simply because it was next to impossible to beat with conventional weapons.

    How do you like.<O:p

Congrats on your A mate. :)
I'd say good enough for a school report.

A tiny critique I'd offer is that some mention of the vehicles failings would have been interesting. I also think of 'Royal Tiger' as cropping up more often in American publications but I'm really not sure...

but as You got the precious A then it doesn't really matter does it, Can't expect every English teacher to be au fait with sloped armour can we. ;)

    Nice one,
    Adam.

Well done. May I ask what level of school you are in?

I hope i get the chance to write a paper on a topic like this. This coming fall I am taking a course at my community college "The History of World War II".
