Postcards i have of pre war 1 & 2 of La Panne to show how sandy it was. Looks a nice place then. I would have thought the sand would have got into the houses a lot.

It breaks my heart to see all these old cottages, houses and stylish buildings build during the Interbellum disappear one by one and replaced by soulless constructions build for the sole benefit of profit through tourism. Not only in De Panne, but also in Koksijde, Oostduinkerke and Nieuwpoort. Even Veurne, which had been somewhat preserved, is now succumbing to this disease...

My advise: be quick if you want to visit the landmarks where your grandfathers have fought - in less than a decade it might be all gone...

Christian has sent me a link about digging up your garden in France and uncover archaeological remains. inc ww1 and ww2 bits. Toutes les annonces immobilières dans le neuf et l’ancien - Bien’ici
This would not work in the uk
    Quote
Furthermore, the interest in carrying out excavations in one's garden to uncover archaeological remains has been reduced since the law of July 7, 2016. Since this law, all movable or immovable archaeological property belongs 100% to the State .
Undertaking archaeological excavations alone in your garden is nearly impossible without government authorization. The government has a virtual monopoly on archaeological research conducted by its own departments or by mandated professionals. Furthermore, if you discover valuable archaeological remains, you will lose the use of your garden during the excavation.

This essentially corresponds to German law up to modern (wwII) war material. The aircraft excavators have been at loggerheads with some archaeologists for years

We have quite good relations with the district archaeologist and can obtain a temporary permit for "exploratory excavations" relatively easily - connections only harm those who don't have them

Just bought these postcards of La Panne pre war. La. De Panne was just up the road or beach from Dunkirk and a lot of troops had to get to Dunkirk to get out back to to England. First photo of houses just to the right of one of the other photos i put up. I don't have a lot of photos the dunes at La Panne but a few 1940 of the seafront with the bandstand. It's hard enough to walk in the sand let alone been shot at and shelled and in hobnail boots and BD. More Dunkirk photos are coming in the post.
