Just watched the 1958 film Dunkirk on ITV4 starring John Mills and other famous actors. Must admit I really enjoyed it-have any other forum members seen it and what did they think? Lesley
It's a great film! You can't beat a John Mills war film. All of the old films will remain classics as many starred veterans, so there's an authenticity that can't be replicated and improved upon by more sophisticated special effects.
It's a personal fave; the "interlude" in the woods with the RA battery is one of the classic bits of B&W war film. Other bits are a bit "thin" - like the HMG on the Dunkirk perimeter that seems to be firing invisible bullets in its ammo belt but to match this, there are the big crowd and special effects scenes like the Dunkirk Basin and sinking ship scene. It's just SUCH a pity it wasn't made in colour! :p
I had seen bits of it now and then but never the full thing till around Christmas. For its time it is a very good film. I had the privilege of meeting Sir John once. A very humble and unassuming man. Keith
An all time classic and one of my often watched favourites. John Mills (Sir John) starred in so many films of the era it is difficult to count them. Ice Cold in Alex is another favourite. An interesting (alright - anorak) observation, the music for Dunkirk was also used for 'The heroes of Telemark'.
Looks like sir john just missed out on witnessing Dunkirk: Viewing Page 6619 of Issue 34995 Viewing Page 890 of Issue 35075 Probably 1 of the shortest commissions on record Regards Simon
For its time it was an excellent Film..................anyone seen the latest Christopher Nolan offering?
Watching it now with youngest. Tis a brilliant film, especially as John Mills & his chaps are '' B company , Wiltshires, 13th Brigade.''
