And what would that Valid point Be Lee? It wasnt Germany's greatest defeat not even close. They held the line. Only just but hold it they did. Market Garden was NEVER considered a defeat of the Germans. More like an opportunity lost. Could I ask you what your point is about Montgomery?? There are plenty of Brilliant Generals out there and we could all spend the evening naming their vanquished opponents. Why Montgomery? Do you feel he isnt getting enough recognition? If so why not?

I believe that Monty's reputation was marred by failures such as Market Garden....

The Book "armageddon" totally trashes his reputation as a general however, as well as many other of the allied commanders.
Lee this is the guy who mentioned Armageddon. Now you have called him a bloody traitor but as he is American please tell me how being critical of Monty is treason in the States.

While you're doing that please also consider that the chap at least posted a source backing up his claims, You might not agree with it but at least it showed that he went to the trouble of trying to back up his claims.

Correct, it was not a great defeat for the Germans, however it was not a great "blunder" of Monty's, it was a bold plan, and did not succeed.

As a side note on MG, I read that there was an intact bridge about 12 miles west of Arnhem, which was lightly defended. Horrocks wanted to try to push across it but was denied. Has anyone read about this?

Freebird, I think there was some mention of it in various books but I dont know which. There was also the Driel Ferry which was intact and could have been used to ferry troops across to Arnhem

You didnt say "What if" though, you actually said that it was Germany's greatest defeat, I merely pointed out that it wasnt and provided other examples to show you why.

I would also like to state that General Winter was very effective at killing Russians too. That particular General didnt take sides in the Eastern Front and so probably wasnt THAT effective.

If you take the successful one, then all the others are runners up to Monty. Outstanding as a general and tactician.

I dont agree. Monty was an excellent General but I dont believe he was the best. Master of the Set piece battle, excellent motivator, superb organiser but not infallible and almost as overrated as Rommel or Patton
