Hi everyone, I am on a learning curve and need advice what something written in the Royal Artillery Attestation book. Under the Regimental number is had written 'ac' and I wonder what it means. I cannot find any personal details on James and would like to tell his story, and wondered if I could figure out what that meant, I might find another place to look to help me tell his story. Gunner BURKE, JAMES Service Number 1083453 Died 12/04/1943 Aged 22 172 Field Regt. Royal Artillery Any help would be appreciated.
UK, Army Roll of Honour, 1939-1945 Name: James Burke Given Initials: J Rank: Gunner Death Date: 12 Apr 1943 Number: 1083453 Birth Place: Flintshire Residence: Flintshire Branch at Enlistment: Royal Artillery Theatre of War: North Africa Regiment at Death: Royal Artillery Branch at Death: Royal Artillery Casualty Gunner BURKE, JAMES Service Number 1083453 Died 12/04/1943 Aged 22 172 Field Regt. Royal Artillery From the above we can calculate he was born in 1921 +/- 1 year but looking at the records he could have been registered in Lancashire or Cheshire as I cannot see any registered in Flintshire TD
Hi Mavis, IMHO the “ac” query you’ve raised probably doesn’t have any great significance in terms of his military service. However the series of numbers and letters below his name will cross reference to his name and address entry on the 1939 register, mini census Sept 1939, available on Findmypast. It is his National Registration Number that would’ve been on his National Registration ID Card. Good Luck Steve
Thank you both for all the information and Steve I wondered what that number meant. It would be good if I could locate him from that, as I can't find him otherwise! I am learning all the while, thanks both for your help, Regards, Mavis
