I've been trying to get hold of Eric Maschwitz's autobiography for ages, and I finally got to read through a copy at the British Library this week.
He's best known for writing the lyrics for A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, but he led a surprising double life for much of the war. During the summer of 1940, Second Lieutenant Maschwitz was posted to Beverley by MI6 Section D to recruit civilians in the East Riding of Yorkshire. These men and women would be the saboteurs who would lead the resistance behind enemy lines were the Germans to invade these shores. Many would later form the core of the Auxiliary Units.
He went on to work with SOE in New York, Political Warfare at Woburn Abbey, and Psy-Ops leaflet section during D Day, ending the war as a Lieutenant-Colonel.
After the war he became Head of Light Entertainment at the BBC and gave Doctor Who the green light!
You can read/listen to his strange and wonderful war story here: Nightingales and Nitroglycerine: The Secret War of Eric Maschwitz
