Hi Can anybody find any information regarding Ernest Martin Baston (born Newcastle upon Tyne, England 1913 - died 7th June 1944. He was Lance Corporal 3604209 - 9th Bn. Border Regiment. He is buried in Imphal War Cemetery, India. The only other thing I can find is a newspaper article from 22nd February where his mother received news he had been wounded while serving in the East. Any help is much appreciated Thanks Darin.
Hi Darin - Have you checked the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website? If not, you will find documents linked to his burial at Imphal War Cemetery. If you click on the link and scroll down you'll see a section called CWGC ARCHIVES: Casualty Also, you can send off for his service records. With those it is usually possible to find out a lot of information: Get a copy of military service records: Apply for the records of someone who's deceased - GOV.UK In the meantime, there may be someone on here that can give you some helpful info about his regiment. Julie.

As to how L/Cpl Baston was wounded, the 9th Battalion were in 17th ('Black Cat') Division and were conducting fighting patrols in the Chin Hills at the time - another man was wounded on the same date, and two more a few nights later, it's possible the battalion and/or divisional War Diaries might refer to an action or operation. There's a forum dedicated to The Border Regiment, might be worth asking on there too. Cheers, Pat.
