To mark the 75th anniversary of the first evacuations of children from British cities during World War II, wartime evacuee James Roffey shares his story.

James Roffey founded the Evacuees Reunion Association charity.
Aged eight, he was one of the first children to be evacuated out of London on September 1, 1939, two days before the declaration of the Second World War.
The 83-year-old was the youngest of five children and was evacuated from Camberwell, South London to Pulborough, West Sussex with his sister Jean, then 13, and his brother John, then eight.
This is his story as told to BT.com’s Becky Barnes.
