    For those interested.

It is stated in the book 'Torn Horizon' that Father Egan is buried at the 'Sacred Heart Church' in Wimbledon. This however is incorrect, as the church itself has no grave yard as confirmed via the Parish Secretary. She has suggested that the service was probably held there and that he was buried at the Borough of Merton's cemetery in Garth Road. An email has been duly sent to them to see if they can confirm this.

I wonder how this fits in??

    Hi,
It's a long time since you posted your question but I came across it by chance while doing a google search.
For what it's worth Father Egan was the headmaster of Wimbledon College Preparatory School (better known as Donhead). I attended that school from 1968 - 1973. He was an austere and on the surface a slightly arrogant man but had a redeeming self-deprecating sense of humour. I think he had a commitment to fairness which schoolboys appreciate. Egan was a Jesuit so you would probably need to access their records rather than the general records of the RC Church.
Egan retired around 1970 and I believe he died in the late 1980s. My mother attended his funeral (Sacred Heart Church, Wimbledon, SW19); she gave me a fulsome report of the service. The Paras sent a bugler along; he played The Last Post - as one would expect but as the final notes faded away he broke into Reveille (I understand at Egan's request to symbolise his belief in eternal life).
I don't know if you are still monitoring this but if you would like more info reply and if I see your reply I shall try and respond but I am not a regular visitor to this site so no promises!

I found it when I did a search on "Sacred Heart Church, Wimbledon".....

    Hi Paul

I also came across this when I was trawling the net for info.It was only after after my email conversations with Barbara the Parish secretary who is based at the 'Sacred Heart' that I found out the church did not have its own graveyard and that it was only used for funeral services.

    Hi Dave,

Not sure where he is can you tell me before monday... He could be in Wimbledon's one which is at Durnsford Road, I've been to both but of course looking at WW2 ones.. Did chat to Andybaldeagle about this and I would not have him anyway for that reason...But if I know before monday me and Paul will go and see what we can find....

    Cheers

    Job done!
I spent an enjoyable few hours with Tom this morning having a chat and a coffee and then going to the cemetery in Gap Road (when Tom eventually found it after going the wrong way, typical bus driver!!!). I'm sure he'll post the pics up at some stage when he gets back from his lunch, if he can find his way back that is!!................
