My favourites are Longest Day, BoB, Angels One Five, Kelly's Heroes, Sink The Bismarck and Dambusters, but I also wanted to mention a film called Theirs Is The Glory. It was made in 1945 and is about Market Garden, but didn't use actors. The men who played the parts were survivors of 1st Airborne playing themselves in the ruins of Arnhem itself, and is the more affecting for that. I gather it was made in mid-1945, just after the town had finally been liberated. I met one of the veterans in the film on a visit to Arnhem last year and bought the DVD at his suggestion, and was glad I did. BTW, don't ever recall having seen a film about 14th Army in Burma, and would have thought Kohima would have made a great subject for a film - anyone know if one was made (either generally set during the campaign, or specifically about the battle), and prepared to make a recommendation? Thanks,
My favs are 'Where Eagles Dare' has been since I was a kid. The 'Memphis Belle' doc, not the feature film. 'The Battle of Britain'. 'Hope & Glory'. Least favs include, 'Kelly's Heroes', 'The thin red line'.

It was about the Siegfried Line I believe.
Anybody know where "Orders to Kill" (1958) has been buried. It is about the training of an assassin and the resulting conflict between conscience and duty. Very intense. "The Longest Day" (1962) had my vote long before I saw it. It came out 17 years after the actual event. When it was first released I was 15 years old and about to join the Royal Navy. One Saturday afternoon I was walking past the local cinema when the first show was getting out. Some of the men leaving the cinema were crying their eyes out. This awakened in me the reality of war.

A recent Korean movie - "Brotherhood" (or "taegukgi", to give it its Korean title) I can also recommend very highly indeed. Set in the early part of the Korean war, it tells the story of two South Korean army conscripts and rivals anything that Hollywood has ever done. Made for just $7million, the on screen production and musical score leave you thinking it cost four times that amount. Go rent it or buy it - trust me, you won't regret it! I've just watched Taegukgi, after buying it in a charity shop for £2.99. Very good indeed. Brutal stuff.
