Just had a quite look, no entry in the book for the above loss. Just off out, will investigate further if no one has he loss details. Seems they were not in the U.K. At that time.
At this time 242 Squadron was in North Africa as part of Operation Torch, (No. 242 Squadron (RAF) during the Second World War) The pilot you're looking for is mentioned in A History of the Mediterranean Air War 1940-1945 volume three Tunisia and the end in Africa November 1942 to May 1943 (Shores et al) with the loss described on page 228. Hampshire was lost defending Bone during an air raid on this date. Loss information 242 Squadron Spitfire Vb 'S' left 1030, shot down near Bone Plt Off A Hampshire MiA He was one of two 242 pilots lost during this raid. Two 81 Squadron pilots were also killed during it.
Thanks everyone. Clutching at straws at the moment. Looking for a cousin of my dad, not even sure if it is 1st cousin or more distant at the moment. Pretty sure the loss was on a New Years Day, and probably 1943. Of the two lost, he looks most probable at the moment. No family links found yet though...
