Hi Diane, I'm guessing that from Fleetwood you must have known a 'Sherlock', there are so many of them there. Alfred was one of 13 children to Joseph Sherlock and Annie Sherlock (nee Rowan). All originated from Fleetwood/Blackpool area. We suspect that Joseph may have spent some time in Youlgrave, Derbyshire, there are a branch of Sherlock's there too. Had Alfred survived the war he would have been my great uncle. My Grandfather, James (Alfred’s brother) met Doris from Long Eaton (Derbyshire) while she was on holiday in Blackpool. James moved to Long Eaton and married her, so here in long Eaton we have a Sherlock branch of the family tree. Most of the rest stayed local to Fleetwood (we think). All the brothers served in the war. When I was very young, my Dad, James, (son of James from Fleetwood) would take us to see our surviving great uncles. Sadly all gone now but their families live on in great numbers. Back in the early 1900’s, the Sherlock’s were ice cream sellers in the area, I have photos of them with their hand carts. I have recently unearthed from my dads loft (just last week here in Long Eaton) hundreds of photographs of the Sherlock’s from Fleetwood going right back to the late 1800’s. They must have come here with my Grandfather and then been left with my Dad, My sister (Anna) and I never knew any of this existed until last week. Even my Grandfather's war medals and all his paperwork including original birth certificate (1906) are in there! We are now trying to put names to faces and we are absolutely sure that all 13 siblings are here on the photos, including Alfred. We just don’t know yet who is who? We have a newspaper clip from the war ‘The Serving Sherlocks’ (I've attached it for you) shows most of them (Alfred's brothers) together in uniform, we’re using that to try put names to faces, then hopefully we can fit the (hundreds of) pictures we now have to each one. All recently unearthed it will be a long job but it is exciting to find out more. My Sister (works for HMRC) is very good at tracing stuff and keeps finding more. We also found a family tree, goes back to mid 1700’s and finishes circa 1994. this was done by a distant cousin (Jacqueline and grand daughter of Alfred) who now lives in Spain and who we can't trace. It is this that my sister and I are going to try investigate and bring up to present day. From this family tree we can tell you of Alfred........ Son, (one of 13 children) to Joseph Sherlock and Annie Sherlock (nee Rowan). Grandson to John Sherlock and Elizabeth Sherlock (nee Fryer). (John and Elizabeth had 12 children, all on the family tree) Great Grandson to Samuel Sherlock and Elizabeth Sherlock (nee Chelsford). (Samuel and Elizabeth had 7 children, all on the family tree) Great, Great Grandson to Richard Sherlock and Anne Sherlock (nee Bland). (Richard and Anne had 12 children, all on the family tree) I have attached a clip from the family tree starting at Alfred, download and zoom in and you will see Alfred had three children who went on to have his grand children. Alfred's grand daughter Jacqueline is the distant cousin in Spain we are trying to find, she is the one that created the family tree, we think. It is a shame that my dad, (Nephew of Alfred) did not share all of this with us when he was able, he is now suffering severe dementia and resides in a home, he could have told us so much. Instead, my sister and I are now tracing from this surprise and exciting find from his loft. I'll post this on the WW2 Talk forum too. Best regards Andy Sherlock (grand nephew of Alfred Sherlock). P.S I'm on the family tree too, my son Jack will be entered ASAP. Alfred is front right in clip below
