A good friend of mine helped a genleman and a lady companion with transport around Arnhem during the 1994 commemerations, they had come to Arnhem by train and ferry, my friend spent some time with them over three days and he learned the gentleman had come to remember his brother who perished in the battle, he has NKG.They swapped addresses and once home my friend recieved this verse written by R.F.SHIPLEY 17-9-94 in Oosterbeek cemetery, with a letter of thanks for his help. it was in this letter he disclosed he was a glider pilot and had been in Arnhem during the battle, poss half a mile from were his brother was killed,His brother was Pte NORMAN SHIPLEY C COMPANY. 2ND BATT NO 8 PLATOON. I have thought long and hard about inserting this well known picture in this thread, respectfully I have. See ATB page 413 vol 2. On page 104 of gunners at Arnhem it is possible to learn a little more about SHIPLEY GPR this very modest man, none of this was in the letter either, a man of few words but mighty with the pen, R F SHIPLEY died shortly after this visit.
