    Hi all,

Does anyone know of precedent of armoured regiments (for instance) in Fourteenth Army returning to the UK with their vehicles and THEN demobbing?

That's a good point about the shortage of shipping.

I just won an auction of some photos of Archers of the at/k regiment of 2nd Infantry Division. I knew they got some in India in the summer of 1945. However in these photos they are not wearing tropical kit - so possibly they are from after the regiment returned to the UK? It's rather confusing.

I believe most was turned over to Indian units rather than ship it back to the UK. After checking on a number of the war diaries for the armoured regiments still in India at the end of the war, it seems that all converted to soft vehicles by 1946. Some listings mentioned turning over tanks to Ordnance depots but not many specifics.

These should give you some idea of what was happening in RAC units in India after the war.

As David pointed out, most of those were left to new India and Pakistan armies. Lot of stuff shipped to the Far East was not new to begin whit, but rather stuff that is already used in other theaters like the North Africa and Italy or considered obsolete for use against Germans in Europe, like Grant/Lee tanks. I might be wrong, but I think that I read somewhere that Shermans used in Burma during 1945 were previously used in Italy and were sent to the Far East once units there received new tanks. But not sure if my memory is wrong or not on this.

It seems tanks, amongst them Churchills, were returned to the Ordnance Depot at Kirkee, near Poona, as British Regiments were disbanded and/or repatriated. See: Churchill Tanks in Burma and India

Some of these at least were handed over to the Indian Army (and subsequently Pakistan Army) as evidenced by the many vehicles being held on display at museums in both India and Pakistan. The association of Ahmednagar with the Churchill tank continues to this day. The Indian Army, Armoured Corps Centre and School established the Cavalry Tank Museum there in February 1944. Among the fifty or so exhibits are:

    - Churchill Mk VII
    - Churchill Mk X (Mk VI chassis; Mk VII turret; 75mm gun; Mk VII driver’s visor and MG mount)
    - Churchill bridgelayer
    - Churchill ARV Mk II (Armoured Recovery Vehicle).

See: Surviving Churchill Tanks - Ahmednagar

There is also a Churchill Mk VI at the Pakistan Armoured Corps Depot Museum, Lahore.

There were perhaps fewer "war worn" vehicles shipped from North Africa and Italy to India than might be expected:

896 Grant/Lee tanks were exported brand new from the USA to India between 21 Feb 1942 and the end of the year. These broke down as:-
    369 Grant petrol
    10 Grant diesel
    515 Lee petrol
    2 Lee diesel.

In 1943/44 623 Shermans were shipped direct from the USA to India. Most were M4A4 but there were small numbers of M4A1 and M4A2. There were at least enough M4A2 on hand to equip the 19th King George V Own Lancers through to the end of the war, so 60+.

The M4A4 seem to have come from late production batches or were reconditioned tanks. M4A4 production had ceased at the Detroit Tank Arsenal run by Chrysler in Sept 1943 after 7,499 had been produced. Of these just over 1,600 had been delivered to the US Army and used for training in the USA. From about mid-1943 a remanufacturing programme was begun, whereby these US Army vehicles were taken back to Detroit to be rebuilt to the latest Sherman M4A4 standard. Between Dec 1943 and Oct 1944 1,610 of these remanufactured vehicles were delivered to Britain under lend lease, with some going to India. They were effectively as good as new. Shermans began to reach units in India around Aug 1944.

Some tanks were undoubtedly transferred from Italy, like the Sherman III DD used to equip the 25th Dragoons in time for Operation Zipper.

There was also the 31st Indian Armoured Division (retitled the 1st Indian Armoured Division on 1 Sept or Oct 1945 depending on source). This unit had served in Iraq, Syria, Egypt & Lebanon from mid-1942. From Nov 1943 it had two Sherman equipped regiments in the 252nd Indian Armoured Brigade plus an armoured recce regt similarly equipped. The latter, 13th Duke of Connaught's Own Lancers, returned to India in Sept 1945 and was transferred to the 50th Indian Armoured Brigade, with the rest of the division following a short while later. I assume that they took their tanks with them.

As for Churchills in India, so far as I can see the numbers are less than clear. 254 Indian Tank Brigade was supposed to re-equip with them and had 23 Churchill V & VI on hand by mid-Aug 1945. AIUI all the Churchills dstined for India were to be exported from Britain.

Following the capture of Rangoon at the beginning of May 1945 all the remaining armoured formations in Burma were returned to India:-
    1. to reduce the logistic burden on 12th Army which took over responsibility for operations in Burma from 14th Army on 28th May 1945; and
    2. to prepare for Operation Zipper, the invasion of Malaya which was the responsibility of 14th Army, and subsequent operations including possible involvement in Operation Coronet, the invasion of Honshu, Japan in March 1946 had it been possible to persuade the US to allow an increased Commonwealth participation.

A number of infantry divisions and RAF squadrons also returned to India at this time for the same reasons.

There was then some reshuffling of armoured units amongst the 3 Indian Army Tank Brigades The 50th Indian Tank Brigade plus the 25th Dragoons were earmarked for Zipper while 254th Indian Tank Brigade was to convert to Churchills.

At the same time 34th Armoured Brigade was being prepared in Britain for transfer to India with 3 of its own regiments to have a one third / two third split of Crocodile to gun Churchills. A Sherman regiment was attached temporarily which was destined for 31st Indian Armoured Div on arrival, as was the 49th Armoured Carrier Regiment with Ram APC. With the end of the war this movement was cancelled.

I was initially tempted to bid on those photos too. As you have said, previous evidence provided on this forum showed that 100 ATk Regt were indeed equipped with Archers in India, however on closer examination I decided there were either UK or Germany. The division had been disbanded in Malaya and was , I believe, reformed by redesignation in BAOR in 1947. Perhaps the photos date from that period.
Perhaps you could share some of the photos here and give the forum's Archer experts a crack at them?
