Could someone from a different part of the country join up somewhere else? Frank was from cardiff.

    Hi Gareth,

Yes, men would go to their local enlistment centre, but this did not guarantee they would be posted to a local Regiment. My Grandad from Hampstead in London, enlisted at Paddington and was posted to the Devonshire Regiment, 9th Battalion.

Aha. Thanks for the info. If I could see his cap badge it would make it easier but I can’t make it out. Any other ideas? Could I get hold of his war records?

Possibly, take a look at this link to the MOD website and have a read. With Frank's birth and death details, you should be able to make an application for his records. Then you would know for sure where and with whom he served during WW2:

Thanks. We don’t have any death details, only his birth.

Also how did you know he was injured? (If it is the correct frank James)

That info did not come from me, it was forum member Guy Hudson. He posted what I assume are casualty rolls for the Beds & Herts.

Some of the Beds and Herts soldiers were attached to the S.A Rifles in March / April 1941. What for exactly I don’t know. I know my grandad was with the SA rifles for about a month in 1941. He could possibly be in that picture if there’s more to it??

Bit of an update. I ordered the marriage certificate for Frank and Beryl and it is the wrong person so another dead end. I applied to the MOD for his WW2 records but without a death certificate or proof of next of kin they cant help. Can anyone suggest another way of searching for him?

Is there more to the original picture you posted?
If he did join the Beds and Herts Regt they were in Palestine 1939/40 so that matches his medal ribbon.
If there’s more to that picture it might show something to ID.

I see there are 8 family trees

Ancestry seems to show he was born 22 June 1917, - I have yet to find the death cert details for a Frank James born with the date in 1917, and none of the trees have either.
Is it therefore possible that he emigrated

    For example
UK and Ireland, Outward Passenger Lists, 1890-1960
    Name: Mr F James
    Gender: Male
    Age: 34
    Birth Date: abt 1917
    Departure Date: 6 Jun 1951
    Port of Departure: Southampton, England
    Destination Port: Melbourne, Australia

I know this is the wrong man but placing these details here so that others may find it useful
    Name: Frank James
    Death Age: 76
    Birth Date: 16 Jan 1918
    Registration Date: Nov 1994
    Registration District: South Glamorgan
    Inferred County: South Glamorgan
    Register Number: D24A
    District and Subdistrict: 8901D
    Entry Number: 95

This ties up with these family trees
Birth 16 Jan 1918 Bridgend, Glamorgan, Wales
Marriage Apr 1946 Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales
    Death Nov 1994 Glamorgan, Wales

    Father Thomas James (1877-1922)
    Mother Rose Ellen Williams (1880-1950)
