    Medals: campaigns, descriptions and eligibility

The Defence Medal is awarded for non-operational service such as those service personnel working in headquarters, on training bases and airfields and members of the Home Guard. The medal is also awarded for non-operational service overseas for example in India or South Africa.
To apply for the Defence Medal, you must have either:
1080 days (3 years) service in the UK between 3 Sep 1939 and 8 May 1945
1080 days (3 years) service in the Home Guard between 14 May 1940 and 31 Dec 1944 (you will also need to fill out and send the Home Guard service questionnaire)
360 days (1 year) non operational service overseas between 3 Sep 1939 and 2 Sep 1945
180 days non operational service in an overseas area deemed to be closely threatened or subject to air attack between 3 September 1939 and 8 May 1945

    Would he fit the criteria?

  3. Dear trick dicky

thanks for your email. i'd had a look at criteria and he was serving in the army before war broke out.
this is what i found for criteria was just wondering if he would possibly qualify

Awarded to service personnel and many civilian organisations for three years service in non operational areas subjected to air attack or closely threatened. Also awarded for one years overseas service - If the overseas service area was subject to enemy attacks or closely threatened the qualifying period was reduced to six months. Many WW2 home defence and related organisations were eligible such as the Home Guard, Auxiliary Fire Service, Civil Defence, etc.

Whatever I or others think the only people who can award medals to him are the medals office and again as in your other thread either you or the medal office need to precise details contained within his service records. So I would suggest following the official course to reach your conclusion

Please note that any years prior to 3 Sep 1939 do not count towards any of the WW2 medals as it hadnt started until that point
