Perhaps in the 1960s/70s, at Marywell just South of Aberdeen, fuel was discovered leaking to the surface.

It was believed to be diesel from a WW2 storage tank.

Has anybody hear of this before?

    Possibilities are:-

    • Supply for Hillside radar Station
    • Home Guard dump
    • Stolen fuel buried and hidden.

    progress...

Diesel was found bubbling up from the ground at Marywell by the caravan site owner about 1975

The supply had all but dried up around December 1977.

At it's peak, the pumping equipment installed and the water separator could do 100 gallons per day.

The article in the newspaper stated it was possibly a wartime fuel dump. Although looking at old maps on NLS, it appears there may have been a fuel station on the main road to/from Aberdeen to the South. It isn't there on later maps, so suspect what was there was an underground tank that leaked. Water would cause diesel to float to surface where it could be pumped.

Suspect it isn't war related, but no firm evidence either way

Some more info, Apparently a lab analysed the oil and said it was probably old aviation type fuel. It was suggested that it may have been part of RAF Schoolhill (the Radar Station) which could have been used for Generators, else perhaps (like today) MOD pipelines are ran to airfields from harbours / refineries. It could have been a line from (1) From south to RAf Dyce, or (2) To South to Edzell / Fordoun.

The area of the oil in relation to the radar station (about a mile and a half away) had underground storage, if it did leak there is a lot of rock / granite in that area so leaking fuel could have migrated to a weakpoint in the ground.
