Hi to all. I have been asked by a very aged gentleman for help. The Cameronians I have never researched, until today. He has the following medals. 1939 Burma Star. Defence medal. War medal. Oak leaf. The medals must have been self inscribed . G. W. Carter, Cameronians -Chindit. No service number. I have spent a lot of time trying to look for a mention in despatches. My result, nothing. I know a little more than I did. I will advise him to read Jack Masters book. I have been looking as to where the 1st Bn Cameronians where etc. I have gone through the old posts on here. Can anyone give me more information ? Thank for looking, Veronica.
Hi Veronica, The battalion war diary gives no information about the award and he is not listed as a gallantry award recipient from amongst the Chindit listings. However, these are not by any means comprehensive rolls. Hopefully, Hebridean Chindit will have something for you. Steve
Only thing I could think of was doing a scan through the MIA list for 1st Cameronians and not in the list... I could start to go through some other notes and to a word-search for the name but it's not familiar to me... that will take some time... Do you have any more details from him...? Why the interest...? Anything...? Just so you are aware... direct 1st Cam records are scant... virtually nothing... so...
Have you tried searching the London Gazette? I've tried with the initials and got nothing immediate. Maybe try with full first names? Steve
He hasn't been on for a few months but it may be worth dropping a note to 52nd Airborne Honour Those Mentioned The Armies: Mentioned in Despatches to the Armies During WW2 or maybe someone else has the book, it would also give his number
Thanks to all who have replied. The name I have given G.W. Carter, together with the inscription on the medals were all the details that I was given. No Christian names . No service number. I didn't ask what was the interest, aged chap had an interest, that was good enough for me. This man is trying very hard to get to grips with his new and 1st computer. Really wish I could enlighten him . Thanks, Veronica.
The only G.W. Carter M.I.D. that I can find for the Burma Campaign is 900338 Gnr. Royal Artillery. London Gazette 9th May 1946.
Thank you High wood. That was very kind of you to search. I tried the London Gazette spent several hours. I found nothing. Such a shame for the man. I know that he is in lockdown, I think he was looking for something to keep him occupied. I can't see 900338 fitting in with his search. I will spend a little more time with this. I just haven't the heart to tell him I have not found anything. Veronica.
Veronica, you are welcome. I also checked the official Casualty Lists and while there are several G.W. Carters, none are listed as serving with the Cameronians. Equally, he does not seem to to have joined the Burma Star Association. Simon
Thank you again Simon. Well, you really seem to have covered the lot. I wasn't concerned about there not being a Carter having joined the Burma Star Association. My Father & Uncle didn't join either. I am going to have to get in touch with the chap. Veronica.
I had a chat with another member who has the Honour Those Mentioned book and he confirmed High Woods comment that the Artillery Gent is the only Burma MiD - I'm not sure if High Woods info was based on the book or another source.
My source was the online London Gazette. There is a knack to finding individuals who have relatively common names. You can get completely overwhelmed if you don't set date parameters.
If there is a knack I haven't found it yet - even uncommon names can be awkward to search and the searches recognitions of info in the PDF's can be a bit iffy
Do you know if the Honour those Mentioned book is sorted by regiment rather than by date? If it is the former I have a Rhodesian Burma Star Group with an M.I.D. and no regiment but I do have a possible surname.
Simon, Thank you. If there is a knack I have not got it. I found I was kna….d. AB64 , Thank you. Veronica.
I have a lot of the relevant books scanned/OCR'd for quick-search purposes, so... Been through the primaries, on the off-chance... Jack Masters and Richard Rhodes James, Second-string and reference works... Tony Redding (22 Carter's but not your man), John Hedley, Dr Desmond Whyte... Direct Cameronians notes and works... Fred Patterson, Rev Donald MacKay, Donnie McKenzie, Stanley Rothney; their War diary (mostly Officer Returns, on the off chance), the MIA list (more detailed revue)... Not anything... To my surprise, my dad, Kenny Stewart (90 Column), mentions a Sgt Carter being one of the 6 (including him) surviving members of 13 Platoon (his platoon; 40 went in, 6 came out), when he met up with them 4 or so days after the fall of Blackpool... that is it... would be a surprise if that was him, but... There was an incident when the platoon's Lieutenant Chambers and 26 Column's Padre Hawthorn were awarded the MC (17/4/44) ... no other details of others though... Best I can do for the moment...
Hi to replied.Do you think we have gone as far as possible researching C.W.Carter? Thank you. Veronica.
