    Hi,

As other posters have said there is very little/almost nothing about individual WW2 RN sailors on the Internet.
Your only way forward is to apply to RN Disclosures using his full name and DOB.

You need to ask them to look for his “Pay & Victualling” records so they can rebuild his service movements if they weren’t noted contemporaneously on his service record.

Once you have his records and lists of ships/shore establishments where he served members will be able to help you further.

If RN Disclodures find him you ought to get his copy papers in about 2 months. You ought to get an acknowledgement of receipt of your Enquiry within a week. I would reply to that email to request the P&V register checks.

    Good Luck

    Steve

    PS

One of the RN photos towards the end shows sailors in party hats and one in wig. It might be a “crossing the line” ie Equator party? Hugh MacLean may be able to comment further.

If you have Ancestry, I think this is the link to your great great grandfather. Service no. 44089, 9th Battalion King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, killed 4th October 1917:

Here is a fuzzy image of the WW1 pension card. I can’t get a better image as, like Hugh, I don’t have membership of Fold3 or FWR. You can see his widow is Rose Elizabeth and four children are listed, Elsie Ellen, George Edward, Charles Robert and Alice Mary:

    List of soldiers’ effects:

Entitled to the “pair”, the Victory Medal and British War Medal:

For info on his war service, you could do no better than trying the Great War Forum. I can’t see his service record on Ancestry, unfortunately, but no surprise as many of the WW1 records were destroyed and/or damaged in WW2.

Ancestry states that he formerly had the service no.164591, R.H. and R.F.A (Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery), but I can’t see any paperwork there to support their note, so not sure how they know that:

I agree with Hugh the 1st photo looks like Gibraltar and the naval base. Apart from the buildings (which may still be there) it is the gradient in the background which is unique. The port and base are on the western side of Gibraltar.

In Photo 5 with African men with sarongs I think it is in East Africa, Kenya most likely as it had a RN base @ Mombasa; then possibly Somalia or Yemen (Aden Colony).

There also one of two men on a steep rock face, in army-like uniform, with long trousers, I wonder if that is Aden. Known for it's very hot climate and stretches of barren rock into the city.
