Was George's father William Richard Metcalfe in the forces? Born in 1876?

David I`m a little confused as you previously stated you didn`t (for budget reasons) have subscriptions but you DO have an Ancestry account ? Travers found the PoW card on Ancestry and from his post I had a friend who kindly delved a little deeper into Ancestry and I posted the documents above ? Wobbler then kindly posted the Liberation document from Ancestry . If you have Ancestry then the answers for George Ronald Metcalfe 1911-1968 were at your finger tips all the time ?

Just an observation which could have saved some time (for everyone )

I have a non subscription account with Ancestry. I use their facility to build my tree but can only read about 10% of the hunts. I cannot contact members or download anything. I rely on Free BDM, Family search, Curious Fox and a number of obscure source forums.

"sign-up to download" means a paid subscription. I don't have one because I cannot afford it.

That`s fine IF you had an Ancestry account and weren`t sure how to get the best out of it I`m sure there`s a thread somewhere on here in which you could find helpful tips ? Either that or someone with Ancestry knowledge could have guided you through researching military personnel ?

As it is you have clarified what you do have/not have so as you were ,so to speak.

    Thanks for clarifying .

I've been on this forum for some time and have never had a paid subscription to anything.

That`s fine . It was an offer to help yourself (and others) IF you had a subscription nothing more . My mistake/misunderstanding from your two posts . You haven`t so that`s it . You can have free access at a library (Ancestry Library Edition ) if you were desperate to find out something which members couldn`t answer on here ?

Good luck with your future enquiries .
