A mate asked me to help out with research into his Grandfather. First stop service records but we need a date of birth or Army Number. Can any of you lovely members help us out please. Cheers. Here's a photo of the chap in question & his grave, which I think my mate said was in Chigwell. London born & bred . Died 18th May 1990 aged 79. Thanks in advance or any help. As Service Dress he's going to be Pre-war enlistment , don't know whether he was Reg or TA.
Hi, It looks like a Royal Artillery cap badge to me. If he first served in RA then his DOB ought to be recorded in his RA Attestation record in the RA Attestation registers on Findmypast. Steve Y
Yeah I know he RA I put that in thread thread title . I have asked another member to look him up in Attestation records.. Tricky Dicky has also got me a DoB now. 11 June 1910 also his middle name is Edward.
George Edward SELLWOOD Born : 11th June 1910 Died : 2 Q 1990 Redbridge, Essex.? I can't find him in the R.A. enlistment books? Only George Thomas and George Henry James Sellwood
Thanks for helping chaps, passed info onto my mate who is very grateful. Service records will be applied for soon .
Guy, would you be so kind to look for Edward Sellwood in the enlistment books, please. The MoD told my mate there were no records for this George Sellwood. Recently a relative of his said he dropped George & was known as Edward. I know it's 6 years in from me asking originally.

Ok, wow , thanks for being so thorough. Back to square one. My mate says thank you for looking. A thought. Did the Army Cadets exist back then ? That photo is definitely him in a RA uniform. If he there are no records of him all I can think is he was a Cadet & didnt actually join up.
He might have been a 'Badgie', a boy trumpeter. They enlisted at fifteen and transferred to adult service at seventeen and a half or eighteen.
Well he didn't join the Gunners as an adult that's for sure. Thanks for suggesting that. I've told my mate.
He is shown as being at home with his wife when the 1939 Register was taken on 29th September. The territorial Army had been mobilised during August & September so its probable that he was not in the TA. No note is made against his entry to say that he is for example a reservist awaiting recall into the army. There is also no Royal artillery Tracer card on ancestry for any combination of his names.
