Can anyone tell me about these medals? I know they were issued to commemorate the Jubilee, and I notice there seem to be lots of different designs. But who was issued with this particular design? I know this one is neither rare nor valuable, I seem to have 5 of them! Just wondering which members of our family would have been given them, and why.
I do know that local councils and corporations struck their own version of this medal and its design. I wonder if your example is for a specific area or town?
I think you are spot on. I've just found some info on jubilee celebrations in Benfleet (Essex) which just happens to be where I grew up! The council gave every child in the area a special commemorative medal. Now, although our family did not live in Benfleet at the time, I suspect these medals may have been handed out to the children of Sherborne (Dorset). My father was the oldest child at the time of the jubilee (I think it was May 1935) and he would have been 13, so I think these belong to him and 4 of his brothers & sisters.
I think my family must have liked George & Mary, as I see we have 3 of their 1911 coronation mugs on the shelf.
Think you might need to re count them - I see only 2, the two others are QEII (1953) and George VI whereas in 1911 it would have been George V That's only my untested eyeballs of course TD
Yes, I demand a recount! The 4 in the photo are (l to r): QE2, Edward Vll, George V & George Vl But now that I recheck the full group, I see that George V & Mary feature in 4 of the mugs (3 of one design & one other);
