Pre-war how were foreign diplomatic staff (including admin. staff) officially registered when they where posted to Britain? Which department(s) of the British government would have those records today?

I am trying to discover the names of the German diplomatic staff that were in London prior to the outbreak of war in September 1939. I understand that they, like British diplomatic staff, would have been given safe pass out of the country. A relative of mine, after the war, met a German woman who said she was posted to the German Embassy in London prior to the war and left when war was declared. I would like to trace this woman.

I have contacted the German government to see if they have records in their Foreign Office archives. They are looking into it.

The Foreign Office maintain an annual Diplomatic List would suggest a search on London Diplomatic List 1939

You can also contact the Foreign Office and ask for the details under Freedom of Information Act
