An excellent reference is at .......... http://www.fortunecity.com/campus/dixie/921/PoWs/pows.htm The plan and description of the WW2 Stanhill German Prisoner of War Camp near Oswaldtwistle (Lancashire) conjures up personal remembrances for me, for it was located very close to my home. I bicycled by this camp many times. Work details of prisoners performed maintenance work on our municipal playing fields under British military guard.

[/b] Hi Jamesicus, I found Island Farm an interesting site also where the German Top Brass were housed. http://www.islandfarm.fsnet.co.uk/ http://www.powcamp.fsnet.co.uk/Field%20Mar...20Rundstedt.htm
The Great Escape by the Germans from Island Farm is an intersting read if you have 5 minutes. http://www.islandfarm.fsnet.co.uk/
(Exxley @ Dec 21 2005, 10:15 AM) [post=43467]I had always thought Franz von Werra was the only German Pow that ever escaped. [/b] This is a great subject and I never knew about the German's "Great Escape" either - fantastic stuff, thanks lads. Werra was the only one that got a "Home Run" (got back to Germany), as I understand it. BTW - "The One That Got Away" is ESSENTIAL viewing for those that haven't seen it !!
