Either Itdan or me could do it. Or both of us together.

I am far from an expert but there are a few points I can try to help with before Itdan and Stefan get involved. My apologies if I’m off track with any of it but the dates and units are complex. In chronological order:

    1. Page 15. The first date is 1 Nov 1943 when the owner joined II. Abteilung SS Flak Ausbildung und Ersatz Regiment. This was an anti-aircraft training and replacement unit located in the Munich area. Page 1 seems to show that the Soldbuch was issued by SS Flak-(E)-Regiment; I believe this title is shorthand for the full title I give above. His ID tag number was 12388. I can’t see a date of birth anywhere and I can’t decipher his first and surname on Page 1.
    2. Page 14. 1 Dec 1943 the owner was with I. Bataillon of SS-Panzer Grenadier Regiment 36. This regiment was one of two in 16. SS-Panzergrenadier-Division “Reichsfuehrer-SS”. I understand the division formed in autumn 1943 and it fought in Italy.
    3. Page 12. 27Jul 1944 the owner was in a Reserve Lazarett (general hospital) at Langen (south of Frankfurt) possibly after being wounded.
    4. Page 12. 11 Sep 1944 the owner had moved to a Reserve Lazarett at Lingen (close to the Dutch border and north of the Ruhr).
    5. Page 1. I can’t decipher his initial SS rank but his new grade is shown as SS-Sturmmann as at 1 Nov 1944.
    6. Page 12. 28 Mar 1945 the owner had moved to Kr. Laz (this could be Kriegslazarett) 2/603. I think this is a field hospital.
    7. Page 12. 18 Apr 1945 he had recovered sufficiently to be posted to Feld Genesenen [Casualty] Kompanie 50. This would have been a unit providing walking wounded reinforcements to fighting units.

I hope that is of some help. I can’t help but wonder what happened to the owner. Best. John

Soldbuch actually is a pay book, but was used for all sorts of other information
Some information is in old German writing, E.g. The names.
I am not so good at this writing but could ask a teacher-fried of mine.

    anything else you need translating?

    Stefan.

Sometime before 27 July 1944, he suffered bullet wounds (code 31a) and was subsequently awarded the Black Wound Badge on 16th August 1944. Given the crossing out of equipment on 8th June 1944 (including a Luger P08), I would think he was wounded on or shortly before that date when 16. SS-Panzergrenadier-Division “Reichsfuehrer-SS” was still in Italy.

After spells in two Reserve Lazarett, he went to Gen. /SS-Pz. Gren. Ausb. u. Ers. Btl. ? (a training and replacement unit for SS Panzer Grenadier personnel) at some point after September 1944. He was in the recuperation company and was still there in December when he went on leave from 16th - 30th December 1944. There is a number after Btl. but I can't make it out.

He returned to combat in February 1945 (issued a rifle and bayonet on 19th February 1945) but he was wounded again on or before 28th March 1945 (code 31, wounded due to enemy action but not sub-categorised as previously).

PS His christian name is Heinrich. I think his surname is possibly Kraner.

I am not really a specialist in this German (or Sütterlin) script. Wikipedia just told me that the teaching in school of this writing was banned by the Nazis in 1941. It was not reintroduced after WWII. But I might add:
His name is Heinrich Kramer or Kremer, common German names.
Rank was SS-Kanonier (lowest rank in artillery formations), promoted to SS-Sturmmann (equivalent to rank Gefreiter in the Wehrmacht).

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for all the replies and I’ll be passing the info to his son ,I never met him but he eventually settled in Oxfordshire had four children and a career as a builder ,I’m told he never spoke of the war but his youngest son “my friend” was aware of his inner arm tattoo but had no idea of the SS connection ,he lived into his eighties
