Nice link MLW. I didn't know you could get a french version. Looks a lot more clearer than the normal version. You can see the pocket scarred landscape of point du hoc very clearly for example. I'll be having a lot of fun with that later.

Is there any way of getting name places up etc?

Oh yes. Click on the folder marked "CARTES," "Carte KGN," (left side of website screen), then you can change the opaqueness for the map and use it as overlay. A very nice application. Cheers, Marc

The 5.0 beta was released today and has the ability to "go back in time" and view things as they were centuries ago.

Anyone find any cool World War I/II sites from the war period?

Cheers for the heads up on 5.0 guys.

Just downloaded and although it seems better than the last version, I don't think there's much to shout about.

You can see real time earthquakes from within the last hour, time lines as mentioned above, you can locate where the hubble telescope is right now amongst other things.

As for the ship wrecks, I couldn't see any. Tried to find the Titanic but there's only an icon showing where it is. You can't see it. Also tried to view a sunken crocodile in the English channel, but again, only an icon. I think it's a bit over rated. The next few upgrades will no doubt get better with time.

I searched North Korea for military airfields and found a few with swept wing bombers and fighters on them, unfortunately
for some reason I could not print them out, any one know why?

If you are looking for aerials views of sites in France try the French version of Google earth. It has much better resolution.

    [ Geoportail ]

While limited to imagery over France and its territories, Geoportail's has some interesting features to include overlaying the aerial imagery with topographic maps.

Does anybody know if there's a Polish version of google earth?

Been trying to find one to see if there's a better resolution of Auschwitz as the normal version is all blurred. Any ideas would be appreciated.

    cheers,
    marcus

Been searching all morning for Auschwitz. Unless we can find a polish version of GE with better resolution I think we're at a dead end.

The best I can come up with is Monowitz (Auschwitz III).

I missed your post before AHD.

Cheers for the link, but the problem with GE is that the area is all blurred out.
Perhaps one day with an updated image we might be able to get a peek.

Here's a couple I've come across over the last little while, most of the time in the rough area marked, but I've definitively discovered some really neat ww2 relics:

First are some big artillery pits at Dunkirk and a massive concrete bunker that's still around.
Second one is Saipan airbase used by B29's to bomb Japan, completely abandoned, nothing on the island now except the old concrete runways.

StaLag IIB, near the former town of Hammerstein (now Czarne). Resolution is unfortunately poor. This former German barracks is now a Polish Army base. It is also the location of StaLag IIB, where my grandfather was held POW for four years.

    Cheers

Just some of favourites from Iwo Jima. Loads or war paraphernalia kicking about.
Best to have 'Paranamio' selected to see the photos.

Yeah, there's some good photos of it. I like the plane fuselage too.

Perhaps one of the aviation buffs can identify it?
