Hello....unfortunately my grandad passed away before I was old enough to really pay much attention to what he...and so many others did...and what WW2 meant to him. I'm trying to discover a little of where he went and what he did and hope that someone on this forum might be abe to point me in the right direction. I believe he was LRDG and 2nd SAS although he never talked about it. His name was Robert Hildage, a broad Scotsman from Balloch or Glasgow. I understand that he spent some time in N Africa and also repeatedly parachuted over Northern Europe and Italy specifically. Sorry not much to go on but any pointers would be much appreciated. J.
Hi, welcome to the forum. I'm new here too, lots of helpful people here, hopefully someone will be able to point you in the right direction. Pam
Hi J. The first thing you can do taht would really help is to see if you can get some more info on his original regiment, service number and anything that will help identify him more easily. From there as a relative you can request his army documents, which sometimes can add an enormous amount and other times are pretty sparse. Once you know more about him posting a thread with his exact unit may well attract a specialist on that unit who can provide you a lot more detail on when and where he was likely to have been Hope that helps a bit Steve
J you could try sending off for his service records link here Ministry of Defence | About Defence | What we do | Personnel | Service Records | Making a Request for Information held on the Personnel Records of Deceased Service Personnel
jhil If he was in fact in 2nd SAS - then he came under the Command of Major Roy Farran, DSO and three Mc's - if you were to seach for his Obituary in the Telegraph- and discount his early history to the point of his escape from Crete - then you will outline what your Gfather did in that unit...it is a wonderful succesful and exciting time they had ......some other poster on here also served in 2nd SAS - so he might click on for you.. Cheers
Jhil here is the obitutory for Major Roy Farran - you can pick up your Gfathers part when Farran joined the SAS in Algiers.....you can be proud of anyone who served with him.... Cheers Major Roy Farran - Telegraph Cheers
Hi and welcome to the forum as already suggested his serviced record will be of a huge help and will open up your research so much. Regards Kieron
