    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone can help qith understanding my grandads RAF service records. It is slightly hard to read due to the handwriting and abbreviations, especially under the mustering section.

    Thanks
    Cait

    Edit 26th March

I think he may have been part of the 206 squadron but not sure due to the letters following the 206 on his records. If anyone can help clear it up that would be great.

    Edit (27th March 2024)

So I've been narrowing down my grandads whereabouts and was wondering if anyone can tell me what he may have been doing at certain locations

    Middle East 08/01/1942
121 Maintenance Unit, I think in Italy but can specify where 1/10/43
136 ASP (Air store park? I think in Padgate) 30/11/1944
123 Maitenance Unit, Temoli Italy 03/03/1945
141 Maintenance Unit, San Nicandro Italy 10/05/45

Also if anyone knows why certain movements are redacted?
Just it's been over 80 years so I'm not sure what can be confidential?

    Edit (29th March 2024)

So I've worked out that 3 S of TT would be the No.3 School of Technical Training which I believe to have been in Blackpool but I can't figure our what the 3 letters before tha means. Looks like an IWQ but can't find anything on it?

You have not copied the Mustering section that gives trade progression - just classification and special courses.

Sorry for sone reason the file didn't upload properly.
Trying again so hopefully this works.

    Information I'm trying to find:
-What the abbreviations under mustering mean as I can't seem to find answers on Google especially for DPET
-what it saids under Special Qualifications as the small lettering makes it hard to read

While you are sorting that out - I'll suggest DPET is Driver, Petrol

I couldn't figure out how to edit the first post so have reposted the file in a reply.

Yes Driver Petrol then Driver Motor(ised) Transport.

All the 14/9/40 in Postings, Musterings and the first entry all relate to his trade exam at No.3 School of Technical Training and qualification for DP - Driver Petrol, DPet.

The second entry in Special Qual is the result of his examination to see if he had gained the knowledge necessary for reclassification to LAC - took almost a month for the reclassification to come through.

Cheers my whole family were a bit stuck on working that out. All we knew was that he was a driver during his service.

Thank you for all the help.
Would you happen to know what a Good Conduct badge is as his records say he earned one is 1945?

It looked like an upside down single chevron worn on the left arm at the cuff.

Came with a slight pay increment - more commonly described as "for undetected crime" in the service.

    This tunic has one
Help to date this RAF Jacket please

If I could just ask you one more question,

Would you happen to know what it saids under the "Particulars of Medals ect" bit on the first page (left hand side) I've been trying to read it but the cursive makes it hard.

No worries if not. You've been a big help so thank you so much.

Hi, I know I said that was the last question but I've been reading about the Africa Star ribbon and just have a small question.
Was it just the ribbon or would it of came with the medal too. The description isn't so clear and it does say to qualify RAF had to fly over or land in
My grandad was a driver in the RAF so I'm slightly confused

-again a big thank you for answering all my questions

    Ribbon first.

"The medals themselves were not intended to be available until after the cessation of hostilities. Some ribbon issues to overseas troops were delayed, but many had been received by the end of 1943."

His service qualified as he served similar to army personel.

Yes he would receive a medal but later at the end of the war along with any others he qualified for.
