    Hi all
So being and ex serviceman myself I really want to disay my grandads medals beside my own.
I've come to terms with the fact that I am never going to recover his lost medals that were lost years ago.
My thought is to apply for his service records as I am more than happy to buy replicas of his medals as long as I know what he had. but all I can provide is his rank, name and regiment and I know a few places he served.
Has anyone any ideas how I might go about finding out his service number ? Or can I apply with limited information.
I've checked all the usual forces war records.com, ancestry.com etc etc also I've visited the regimental museum and searched their archives for information but have so far came up short.
All I know is LCpl William G cuthbert, York and lancaster regiment.
Served in the 8th army in Africa and Italy that I know off.
Any help will be massively appreciated.
    Thanks

Death cert could be tricky but no doubt I can overcome this.
    Thanks for the reply

Contact the Medal Office. They will be able to tell you exactly which medals were issued to your grandfather.

I reckon that there are people around here that will have a good go at cracking the unknown details for you. What we need is as much information surrounding William as possible.

William's children's names (i.e. your parents) and dates will give us his wife's maiden name, that should enable the marriage to be located and the certificate may well have his age, his occupation, father's name, all that will lead to other avenues.

When did he die and where, age or even date of birth will be on certificate.

    His parents names, locations?

Just give as much as you are able, for William and the generations either side, you may be surprised at what can be uncovered. There is a William George Cuthbert who enlisted with the Royal Artillery and went to the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, NO family details are given so that would just be a big guess at the moment.

You need to ignore military issues and concentrate on family facts to get the required information for his records. Good luck.

As far as I'm aware he was never RA but in the time he was alive he didn't really speak much of his military service.
I will have to pay a visit to his grave to get his date of birth and death as my mum estranged herself from me a long time ago and I cannot contact her to find out any details.
He has 2 daughters Lynn and Marilyn
He died in 2004 in Kettering General hospital Northamptonshire.
My Grandmothers name was betty, not sure if that was just a nickname though as I didn't know her much as she died when I was very young.
Think that's about all I can muster up at present.

From those the last one would be the closest as we are a Northamptonshire based family but unsure on the watts part...
