From memory, the US Library of Congress had a set of the Dutch maps.

I've got most of the that set relating to my Dad's Regiment, but not Breda, which is the main place where they were based. Are there any Collections in London?

    Hello Rob,

Sheet 16NE Breda: rather rare it seems. There’s one in the State Archives in North Brabant. https://proxy.archieven.nl/0/67102AAA42D049DFA3BFF89C2CA9DE68

I can’t see that the 1:50,000 map (GSGS 4083 Sheet 50 Breda) is on line either.

However Holland 1:100,000 GSGS 2541 Sheet 4 Rotterdam is available at University of Texas and McMaster University. I have superimposed your trace on this map. It looks as if the grid intersection points are slightly to the east putting the boundaries out a bit.

1:25,000 Dutch maps from the 1930s/40s covering Breda are available from the archieven.nl site.

I have put your trace over the town of Breda. Hope it’s useful, it shows a bit more detail.

    Richard,

That's brilliant. I had the map references from the war diary and I've visited the locations where 102 LAA Regiment HQ and 336 LAA Battery HQ were billeted. The original house where my Mum lived in 1944 survives. The bus garage attached the the house and where the military vehicles were parked, no longer survives.

The two maps of Ulvenhout & Ginneken I've downloaded and are high resolution. I planned to visit the state archives many times, so I'll contact them soon, to try and acquire a copy of the 16NE Breda map.

The overlay is excellent and I can't thank you enough. :D

    Kind regards,

    Rob

Hi, can anyone help with converting GSGS Co-ordinates to WGS Co-ordinates. The CWGC referred me to a site for conversions; French lambert; trouble is I have Co-ordinates for the Iberian peninsula that I need to convert. I can’t find any info on how to do it. The co-ordinates are for the Iberian peninsula in the Pyrenees in France, an escaper died at the co-ordinates, I wish to go and lay a poppy in the correct location.

This is probably the site Bear.cub has looked at. Unfortunately it does not include the Iberian Peninsular Zone which covers most of the Pyrenees. Only solution is to have a look at the contemporary maps.

    What are the co-ordinates?

    Hi Richard,

this may seem like a silly question, but how do you download the maps off the McMaster University website?

Can you only download them in sections ? When i zoomed out to the edges of a map & downloaded it ,it came out rather blurred!

    Regards,
    Stu.

    Bedee,

    thanks for your advice.

I have tried both of them. Download in medium resolution JP2 is not much use to me. It may well be my laptop? I've downloaded them in High resolution TIFF, but i cant open them which is most strange indeed. I don't have a problem with University Texas website. For some strange reason, I'm struggling to Upload a file to show has a example.

A map I am looking for: GSGS 4427 Venraij, Sheet 19SW, 1:25,000 (Holland). Not available through "the usual sources", such as McMaster. If anyone could help...?

Cheers and best wishes for all, Ronald.

    Hello Stuart,

I’ve download two versions of a map from McMaster University; jp2 and tiff.

The jp2 file needs to be opened in something like Irfanview (with jp2 plugin) which is free to download. It can then be saved in another format.

The tiff file cannot be opened in Microsoft Office Viewer, although there maybe something to download to enable this. The file opens up OK in Windows Photo Viewer.

Here are some links to the maps you are looking for:

MONTESCUDO FIRST EDITION Sheet 109 IV. N.W.

    CORIANO (............ ...............Ditto....................) N.E.

RIMINI THIRD EDITION Sheet 101 III. S.W.

    Richard

p.s. The links are all listed in Topographical Maps

A simple Google offers you a good result.

Its probably me, but I'm still struggling with jp2 plugin, tiff file & Infraview etc. Why not just right click & download the map? Why cant these websites make things simple to people who do not understand the procedures that they have? This website is rather good with the maps that it offers.

    Richard,

i have noticed your link that are listed in Topographical Maps, but i cant view them! Me again doing something wrong. I would like JPEG if possible? Below is what I've managed to download after a while of being on the website! Its not much use.

    Stuart,

When you have downloaded a file what program are you using to try to open the file?

That might not work as the French grid as it is not at the same angle. See this extract of a map with the French Lambert Zone III and Iberian Peninsula Zone.

    Hi Richard,

    thanks for these.

I do think that i may have found a answer to downloading the maps that i require?

I still maintain that it ( really is serious pain in the rear) when all that anyone wants to do is download a map. When you know what you are doing, then its a piece of cake?

I will download it in the smaller size of the jp2 (tiff) & then use a app to change it to jpeg format. If that does not work, then i will find another website...

    Regards
    Stu.
