    Hi,

I’m aware of the advice given on this site regarding the anticipated timescales for the provision of an Army Service Record following an application via the MOD Service Personnel & Veterans Agency route – up to a years waiting time.

Is anyone aware of timescales for the provision of an army service record after an application to one of the Guards Regiments?

3 months have passed since I sent off an application to the Coldstream Guards for my late father’s service record. My £35 cheque was cashed 6th December 2011 but I have heard nothing more.

This is not a moan as I am sure RHQ staff have more than enough to do - just seeking other members experiences.

I look forward to receiving any information forum members are able to provide.

    Thanks.

I'd take the cashing of the cheque as an indication that the search etc should have been initiated at least. I'd imagine the holidays in between mean that there would have been some delay, but as the Archivists can be part time /volunteer /ex-service, there'd be no harm at all in contacting them and checking what the status of your application is. Letter probably best - my own experience of trying to get through by phone - not so successful.

Far as I am aware, going by application I made, timescales are on average a matter of weeks, certainly a lot quicker than having to deal with MOD/Glasgow.

Fingers crossed it turns up soon.

Never been longer than a week when I've ordered them off the Irish Guards.

    Thanks for news.

I will give it another few weeks before enquiring further.

    Hi,

Just to let you all know that my fathers service records arrived by post yesterday with a letter from the Assistant Regimental Adjutant apologising for the delay.

I had also asked for a copy of the 3rd Coldsttream Guards War Diary for late December 1941 to cover the period when he was taken POW at Antelat, Libya. The delay was caused by the mis placing of that WD. It has not turned up. No great problem as I have an account of the incident in the 2nd & 3rd Battalion 1939/45 Book "No Dishonourable Name".

Service records have raised a few queries which I am sure I will post in the coming weeks.

    Steve.

Steve, great news, thanks for update.

As for War Diary - no worries, you can get a copy of the one held at TNA. See link below for CG Catalogue refs.

Sorry I don't have any yet for your Dad's battalion, will get round to it, and others eventually. All on the to-do list.

Hope there's lots to discover in his records.

    Drew,

Thanks for the offer but the book "No Dishonourable Name" gives a very good narrative of the Battalion movements and actions in 1941 and explains the incident when, where and how my father was captured in some depth.

Whilst it would have been good to have had sight of the official version from the War Diary the book deals with it very well and "diplomatically" corroborates my fathers version of events.
