I just got out my copy of march or die a book about the Chindits. This book I bought quite some time ago from our favorite auction site . inside was this name of presumably of a previous owner i wonder if he was a Chindit H CLARKE. EX 14 BRIGADE . 13 PLATOON . any ideas ,mike
Hi Mike, Too common a surname really I'm afraid. I have a Henry William Clarke from Milton Keynes, who was with the 1st Beds & Herts, 14th Brigade in 1944. My own copy of March or Die is also signed by a Chindit, thankfully it is not too difficult to identify him. It is Lt. Bill Smyly, the Animal Transport Officer for No. 5 Column on Operation Longcloth.
bamboo i did not include his address as i thought it might be different all those years later but Aspley guise not far from Milton Keynes is it ! so i think its a good shout ,mike
a long shot but there is a Clarke (married) worth a call you never know St Botolphs Church, Aspley Guise - Contact Details
Well, with that info Mike, I think he is your man. His address was 50 Trunk Furlong, Aspley Guise, MK. I think he passed away in early 2003.
bamboo and cl 1 thankyou . knowing how hard it is to find any thing about the Chindits is so hard any snippet i can find i add it just might be another part of the story. As to Mr Clarke i had a address but just in case he was still with us i did not think it right to publish his address. I don't do it to make research harder ! Mike
I meant by this it might be worth contacting the church they might have a connection or know someone who does just a thought
Here are Henry's BSA membership card and his obituary notice in the Spring 2003 edition of the Dekho magazine:
