Kyle, I must apologise, I thought after reading through other threads you had a copy of Harder Than Hammers. It would appear I contacted the wrong person. I am not well acquainted on how to make a post to get to the right person.

That said you have more than answered my question, the information you have given is amazing, and for that I am in your debt.

My late father in law was a member of the Tyneside Scottish, and spent 5 years in Stalag XXA. I read a brief account of the death of Frank Smith somewhere prior to our visit to the cemetery at Malbork last year where Frank is buried. My brother in law had a feeling Frank was a native of Gateshead, as was my late father in law.

Once again many thanks for the information.

    Regards

    Terry.

    Hello Terry ,

No apology neccesary , I saw your question and knew the answer so rather than wait in the hope someone with the book would answer I put down what I knew.
The 9th Durham Light Infantry (like the 6th and 8th DLI ) were ordered to form duplicate battalions the ninths duplicate being the 12th Durham Light Infantry . Following this the 12th DLI became 1st Tyneside Scottish, part of The Black Watch.
I know this forum can be a little daunting but the people here are good sorts and will help where they can. This thread may be of interest ;-
