I'm currently researching 1058569 S.Sgt Harry Melville Child REME/RAOC who was taken POW on 28/4/41 in Greece presumably at Kalamata whilst serving with 2 H.A.A. Regt. Workshop Sec and held in Stalag 18a. His records show that he died "whilst evading the enemy on or shortly after 27/09/44" in Austria but his CWGC record shows him commemorated on the Athens memorial but to confuse the issue he has a condolence slip for Palestine. Could anyone help out with any information as I've reached a bit of a brick wall! Thanks Richard

Hello Richard, He is rememered on the Athens Memorial as the last place he was in combat was in Greece. This is common pratice for CWGC where missing army personnel are concerned, though not 100% infallible. Regards Vitellino
Thank you all very much for your replies! And Gary thank you for posting the newspaper clip I think that has conclusively answered my question. Regards Richard
