    Hello Bob

    if you visit CWGC

    Results

you can look for Saffron Walden war dead
of course this does not cover all WW2 casualties from Saffron Walden due to the fact that not all place name details were included for residence or birth in the CWGC database

    regards

The Date of death looks like a misprint for 12.2.1945. Taken PW in Singapore and shipped to japan to labour there.

I have carried out similar exercises for St Albans, Stokesley in N Yorks and Aldbourne in Wilts.
There are discrepancies between the names and records of the CWGC.

Parish war memorials were erected, as the name suggests, by the parish. The criteria for adding a name, if recorded at all, will be in parish records.

    Badman Lce-Cpl. Chas. Benjamin (5827896) 4th. Suffolk 5.7.43 age 25 - Thanbyuzayat War Cem, Myanmar, Burma P:B6 R:F G:17.

According to the nominal roll of the Bureau of Record and Enquiry (B.R.E.) , an Allied and therefore clandestine organisation operating in Changi jail, Singapore, L/Cpl Badman lived at 24, Bridge Street, Saffron Walden ( mother ) was employed on a working party probably in or around Singapore Town ( dates unknown ), returned to Changi, moved overland with "F" Force on 25th March 1943, died at Sonkrai, Thailand, on 5th July 1943, cause of death : malaria. Buried initially in Grave C55 at Sonkrai.

Bowers Pte. Alfred Edward (583457) 5th. Suffolk 28.7.43 age 33. Son of Arthur & Harriet. Husband of Glenda Grace of Audley End - Singapore Mem Column 54.

According to the B.R.E. his contact address was at 26, East Street, Saffron Walden (wife), prisoner in Changi (no working party noted ), entrained to Thailand on 31st October 1942, died at Martona, Thailand, on 28th July, 1943, cause of death: beri beri.

    Walters Lce-Cpl. Cyril Harry 5th.Suffolk 12.11.43 age 31 - Chungkai War Cem, Thailand P:6 R:H G:15

According to the B.R.E. his contact address was at 4, Eden Road, Haverhill, Suffolk ( wife), entrained for Thailand on 17th October, 1942, died at Chungkai, Thailand, on 12th November 1943, cause of death: ulcers and avitamosis.

All of the above were almost certainly captured on Singapore on 15th February, 1942. Further information will be available from their POW record cards, commonly known as I.J.A. cards, available on Find My Past, the originals being held at the National Archives, Kew

The nominal rolls are at Kew in series WO/361. Quite possibly all of them have hospital records whilst POW to be found in series WO347 by checking the index books first. They could have been in Roberts Hospital, Changi. Chungkai hospital records are also available. Sonkrai and Martona less likely.

A piece from a Bishops Stortford newspaper last November indicates progress on this. I don't know whether the author is a member on here: he has written a number of books about Saffron Walden.

"A new book pays tribute to 57 Saffron Walden men who died on active service during the Second World War.
Saffron Walden Remembers records details of the soldiers, sailors and airmen from the town who gave their lives between 1939 and 1945.
Author Malcolm White said: "Bob Pike had written an excellent book on the victims of World War One, The Victor Heroes. However, I was conscious, every Remembrance Day, that as the years go by and we all say 'We will remember them', very few people can actually remember any of the brave people from Saffron Walden killed during the Second World War."
