Have just joined the forum. I am a keen researcher of my family military records and also a forces veteran myself. I am currently researching my partner's dad, who served in the 4th RNF in WW2 and was transferred to 50th Recce's in 1941 along with many of his colleagues. I will post more about my current research in a different thread. Looking forward to learning more and helping where I can!
Welcome to the forum, Condor. I am the great grandson of a 4th Bn [Royal] Northumberland Fusiliers WWI veteran, who was KIA 100 years ago on 12 April 1918. The 4th Bn RNF was redesignated 50th Recce on 30 April 1941. It was more a change of name for the ‘unit’ than a transfer. They served with the 50th (Northumbrian) Division for the most part, but were permanently transferred to 22nd Armoured Brigade on 16 February 1942. You should be able to find a lot of information about them on this forum! Best, Steve.
Thanks Steve, this forum is amazingly responsive. I have found my partner’s dad, James Robertson, 4273400, in one of the files - he is mentioned in a memo in the “missing” file and there is also a handwritten note from him on file. It must have been an awful time for them as they really had no chance - he was one of the “lucky” ones who escaped the enemy after being held for several days, quite an ordeal to have those around you blown up or captured and interned! Unsurprisingly he gave little detail to his family after the war.
