Welcome Steve...I have used your Google Earth application - fantastic ! And having been involved in a very small way in early collection of data in Scotland, good to see it all finalised and so easy to visualise, thanks to your work. Nice one :)

Actually some of the Robins Hood bay Pillboxes do still exist right on the cliff edge but they aren't what you would expect. They are actually Seagull trenches or Section posts which are elongated concrete lined trenches with a concrete roof. Take a look at 54 24 52.11 N 0 31 14.00 W

Thanks for trying but "our" pillboxes were definitely the conventional type. i.e. circular and completely independent units.
What perhaps you could do for me is try Sandsend, also on the outskirts of Whitby and another hell hole that they used to dump us off at to do our guard stint.

    Many thanks

Nothing left at Sandsend, It's all gone into the sea, although what was there appears to have been conventional pillboxes although the type is unknown. It makes more sense to place them at sandsend than Robin Hoods Bay as the access from the beach is much better. I'm not sure what purpose the Section posts there did serve as it was an unlikely invasion beach. You describe the boxes as circular which suggests to me that they were of the Norcon or Type 25 variety. These were only large enough to accomodate two or three men with no internal blast wall. Does this match up with your memory of them or are you refering to a polygonal type pillbox?

    Cheers

    Steve,

There is a area of shallow/sloping land from the beach just south of the access to the sea/beach from Robin's Hood Bay that can be walked up before it becomes a cliff again. If memory serves me well it is kind of tiered which suggests erosion so how long that area has been like that I don't know. It is a relatively small area too, around 300/400 meters wide.

    Regards

Steve, earlier on, in Posting No.22, gave me some co-ordinates which I've just looked up again, hence the pic coastline near Whitby .JPG I've just attached here.

In today's cold sap I'm reminded how we all used to freeze in those bloody pillboxes !!!!!
