Hi all, my name is Marco and i'm writing from Italy; I am currently researching the history of Canadian Army in Italy during the second world war. Best regards Marco
G'day from down-under. Welcome to the forum. Plenty to research here, and everyone always eager to help where they can.
Marco, Hello and welcome to the forum. Good Luck with your research. I have managed to retrace some of my late fathers footsteps in Italy to Florence where he served with the 4th Reconnaissance Regiment, 4th British Infantry Division. Regards Tom
Hello Marco and welcome to the forum. Here are some books that you may well have, or be aware of? They have plenty of detail! 1.. Official History of the Canadian Army - The Canadians In Italy by Lt.- Col. G.W.L. Nicholson (at just over 800 pages) is rather thick. The maps was drawn by Captain C.C.J. Bond which are off top quality. Some of the best maps that i have seen in the Italian Campaign (all 25 of them in Colour). It also has over 40 Illustrations. 2..By all accounts, this book is rather rare. 5th Armoured Division, 12th Infantry Brigade The Westminsters' War Diary: An Unofficial History of this Regiment (Motor) in World War II. It is by Oldfield. J.E. and was printed in 1964 (1st Ed; 209 pp.) 3. 1st Infantry Division, 1st Infantry Brigade: DILEAS A History of The 48th Highlanders of Canada 1929 -1956 by Kim Beattie & (another large book at 850 pages!) The maps are not has good has Nicholson's, but that is only my opinion. The Illustrations are of a good quality & quite a few of them! Good Luck. Regards, Stu.
Thanks to all for the warm welcome! I started my research on the Canadian army in Italy two years ago and I've read parts of some books including: Establishing a Legacy The general who never was - by colonel Strome Galloway In this sign The regiment; And no birds sang - by Farley Mowat I've also read the Official History of the Canadian Army but only the part concerning the year 1943.
Hello Marco and welcome from the province of Livorno, I've got some information on the 3 tank regiments of 1 Canadian Armoured Brigade - 11 Armoured Regt.(Ontario Regiment), 12 Armoured Regt (Three Rivers Regiment) and 14 Armoured Regt. (Calgary Regiment) - and their battles on the Trasimene Line and the follow-up in the province of Arezzo. You can read about the involvement of the first two regiments in my book 'La Battaglia Dimenticata. Giugno-luglio 1944' editore Fondazione Uguccione Ranieri di Sorbello, Perugia. Let me know if you're interested in the documentation I used for the book and I'll send it on to you, Regards, Vitellino
Marco, If you go to the Main WW2 Forum Theatres of War: Italy & click on a thread that i started. You will come across a rather large list of books that was emailed to myself. The title of the thread is Dileas: History of 48th Highlanders of Canada 1929-56. A lifetime of trying to obtain them all.. Regards, Stu.
Marco With regaŕds to your mentioning Lucera in your conversation, I didn't ŕemember ever goiing there anď on checking I can see that it was the late Tom Canning who is sadly no longer around to help you out Auguri Ron
Good work Marco, of course, Strome Galloway and a number of other Canadian officers, served with the 1st Army, 6th Armoured Division, for a short while during Feb/March 1943... picture of him attached is from near Bou Arada.... best wishes
