    Hello everyone,

I stumbled aross this site by sheer accident trying to decode a unit on my grandfathers service record. It's an incredible testament to those who served in whatever capacity in WW2 and a huge help to those of plundering about, often far too late in the day, to find answers to family mysteries.

Am belatedly helping my Dad decipher my grandfathers service record. Like many he was very reticent to discuss his war service & he died in a fire at the Cav & Guards Club, Piccadilly in 1967.

Bizarrely, the Antiques Roadshow prompted my Dad to dig deeper as a while ago it featured a WW2 SOE escape & evasion tool - apparently quite rare these days. My Dad sat bolt upright and told my Mum he was sure his Dad had had the same tool - 2 days later he found it in the garage!!

So, back to the search, I've asked Dad to post photos of the service record in the Service Record forum and I had an amazing response from Jedburgh22 to a direct request - then I realised that perhaps should posted it more generally first - so sorry if I messed up.

Called up in last year of his reserve after former service with the Queens Bays
In his records he spent time at both S.T.S 54 and S.T.S 43 in late 1943-Jan 1944.
Then he was TOS No. 2 SF DET
After that the Part 2 Orders miss a page with nothing further till March 1945 when he was transferred to the Staff Sig Sqn.

Jedburgh22 has links him to No 2 SF DET, HQ 1st Canadian Army but unfortunately most of the NCO records were destroyed in the 1950s. Apparently the SF Dets were established to link special forces units (SOE, OSS and Jedburghs) to SFHQ back in London and liaise with the respective Army HQs.

So any advice hugely welcomed - thinking of trying Canadian records next as guess they must have fed & watered the SF Det too..... I'd be thrilled to find anyone on this site who may have any links with any of those who served in any of the SF Dets.

    Huge respect & thanks again,

    Emma
